Start of the trail in Dolgellau

The Penmaenpool Reedbed stretches between Penmaenpool and Pont y Wernddu, on the river side of the path. It is one of the largest areas of reedbed in Wales, and an important habitat for wetland birds such as Red Breasted Merganser and Water Rail. The Reedbed is a perfect breading habitat for Otters, who live on a diet of mainly fish, frogs and small birds. An Otter's metabolic rate is so high, evey day it must eat the equivalent of 15% of its body weight to survive.
